Curly sells a whole more than just cheesesteaks. Every dish I watch come out of his kitchen is very comforting. But this March Cheesesteak Madness. I found this cheesesteak easier to eat than ones I have had in the past. But, it was not mixed very well. A lot of cheese ended up on the wrapper. The cheese that was on the cheesesteak was a little clumpy. I didn’t get any gristle but guest judge Ed did.

DaVinci’s makes their own rolls and dough at Leonardo’s Bakery in the building they share. Hiding in plain site about 100 feet off Bustleton Pike, DaVinci’s makes a very well balanced cheesesteak. It starts with their home made roll. Sidebar – Cheesesteaks are about the meat not the roll. This cheesesteak had tender juicy meat. Everything in the cheesesteak was mixed very nicely. Very Good mushrooms.

When Verona Pizza 1st opened I heard and saw a lot of great things about their cheesesteak. But they are in a strip mall next to a Giant so I was a little concerned. Spoiler alert; this is a darn good cheesesteak. The cheesesteak lives at the corner of great ingredients and very well made. The roll, I still have questions about the roll. But we’ll save them for another day.

This could be Don’s last year in March Cheesesteak Madness because the cheesesteak alone does not tell the whole Don Giovanni’s story. I’ve called my order into Don’s twice and both times I had a great exchange with the woman that answered the phone. $3.99 for a magic bar cookie. $9.99 for a tomato pie. Next time Amigo Dan and I are up that way, we are getting a tomato pie (i’m getting a magic bar) and going to Naked Brewing. The cheesesteak, it was $12 and on a Don made roll.

Judge Phil picked up Tony G’s and loved it there. I edited out a lot of Phil gushing over Tony G’s and its patrons. He didn’t make it to the 2nd floor lounge. Good solid cheesesteak. I think you can expect to get the same quality of cheesesteak everytime you go to Tony G’s. I got the Tony G’s special the 1st time I went there. If you make it to the end of the video you will hear me say a lot of nice things about it.

Workhorse Brewing Company broke my heart and then fixed it with Beer Cheese. I used to love taking cheesesteaks to Workhorse Brewing but then they started making their own food. Holy Mackerel they make good food. Their cheesesteak comes with very good french fries. I think the beer cheese takes the cheesesteak to a higher level. Beer mustard and bar pretzels, come on man!! Judge Phil picked up this cheesesteak. I went through my archives hoping to find more pics & videos from inside and around Workhorse Brewing. Sorry this is the best I could do.

I was meeting some judges so I ordered the large. Over one pound of meat, 20 oz to be exact. It was $26. If you follow me you know I couldn’t get $26 out of my head. By myself this would be 4 meals. I liked the roll. They use a small bakery and I’m sorry I forgot the name. Very good traditional cheesesteak. Nothing, other than the roll, really jumped out at me. Did like that you can eat there and they have a bathroom.

I really liked my first cheesesteak from Bubba’s. They have a Portobello Mushroom cheesesteak that I am looking forward to trying. Sidebar – If I was looking for a vegan cheesesteak I would get it made with mushrooms. The judges think the mushrooms were the best part of this cheesesteak. The roll was a great candidate for scooping.

I forgot how good a cheesesteak Goomba’s makes. Sometimes time and distance helps a cheesesteak get better than it really is. This is a good cheesesteak. Take out only. I always grab a couple Biscotti’s to have with my next day’s coffee. I don’t know if the skills to make a good biscotti transfer to making cheesesteaks. Very good Biscotti and cheesesteaks.

I like a lot of things about SlyFox Brewhouse & Eatery. I got the beer that supported the troops and tasted good. This trip worked out great for me. I was able to sit outside with Elbert. My cheesesteak came with a side. I went healthy and got very good Cole Slaw. Yes, I’m procrastinating. The cheesesteak was standard. The meat was a touch dry. I think they melt the cheese onto the roll. Whatever they did, the meat and cheese were not mixed together.

They do a lot of things great at the Collegeville Italian Bakery Pizzeria Napoletana. Unfortunately this cheesesteak was not one of them. There is a picture of every celebrity with a Philadelphia tie pulling a pizza out of their oven. The nutella desserts look amazing. The baked goods look yummy. This cheesesteak was just about everything I don’t like about cheesesteaks. Bad meat to roll ratio. The cheese was not melted very well. The mushrooms spent very little if any time on the grill.

This is a few slices of cheese (and maybe a quiet room for old people to eat) away from being my favorite place in the world to eat. They can cook. The mushrooms and onions added great flavor. The meat was tender and easy to eat. The roll was more dinner roll than traditional roll but worked very well with this cheesesteak. A few slices of cheese and this is a top cheesesteak. I think George Washington got plenty of cheese.

Cheesesteaks are a 3 legged stool and Mama has 3 good legs. I was eager to eat this cheesesteak. I have had it before but this time I was really going to dissect it. I forgot Mama uses a 3 cheese blend and was surprised when I saw the cheese pull as I separated the 2 halves of the cheesesteak. Big roll, which it needs. The meat was juicy. The cheese steals the show. This is a cheesecheese with some meat. Leftovers came out of the air fryer equally tasty.

I hate how much I like this cheesesteak. Plus I thought it would be a lot more expensive. Go with someone you like when you have a lot of time. The ordering process is cumbersome. 3 of the 5 people at the sandwich counter went on break at the same time. They were not busy and it took over 20 minutes for someone to start making my cheesesteak. I should be happy they made me mad because it kept me from buying a bunch of desserts. I hate how much I like this cheesesteak.

The first time I went to McNally’s Tavern I had a great time. I was afraid my love of the Schmitter was influenced by the rest of my visit. It was not. I love this cheesesteak. The cheesesteak aficionados and social media negativity have already converged on my live video from McNally’s. It’s in the tournament. The wrong region, oh well.

So, looking at the pictures Rocky’s may not win March Cheesesteak Madness. I am glad they are the tournament. Under $10. More importantly this is the kind of place that makes you slow down and reminisce about the good old days. Plus my dad’s old buddy Hughie was from Glenside. I enjoyed my visit to Rocky’s. Was Rocky sending me a message with the toothpick stuck in the cheesesteak wrapper?
