Lillo’s Tomato Pies, Hainesport, NJ

Great cheesesteak.  They serve it in a box so they are not wrapping it up and destroying the roll.  It passes the weight, smell, eye, feel and taste tests.  I get my cheesesteaks with fried onions and mushrooms.  $1 for mushrooms is pretty standard but charging $1 for fried onions (which Lillo’s does) is unPhiladelphian.  $19 after tax.  The roll is amazing.  It is a little dense.  I think it is a great candidate for scooping.  I would love for the scoopage to be made into bread pudding.  I love bread pudding.

Meatheadz Cheesesteaks, Lawrence Twp, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

The meatheadz have been practicing their craft.  Watching the video is much more appetizing than reading my dribble.  The meatheadz make a very good cheesesteak.  It’s a big boy.  The new roll is close to perfection.  Very good amount of meat, cheese and extras.  Everybody was mixed very well together.  While you are there you can take a selfie with the autographed 1st generation Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure t-shirt hanging on the wall.

Mama’s Meatballs & Pizzeria, Pennsauken Twp, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

I am a huge Mama’s Meatballs fan but this cheesesteak made me sad.  It was the victim of high expectations.  I enjoyed my 1st Mama’s meatballs cheesesteak so much that I put it on the landing page of my website Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure.com (no spaces).  This one had a good flavor but the cheese was clumpy and the roll needed to be scooped.

Amato Bros., Oaklyn, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

I like Amato Bros.  I didn’t have much video from this trip so I went into my archives.  I say the same thing about Amato Bros 4 years apart.  They don’t do well with the eye test but their cheesesteaks have flavor.  You’ll see in the pictures.  My roll was bent.  Sounds funny and hard to do but it was.  This cheesesteak had the cheese ‘cut in.’  Judge Twersky would have appreciated that.  Solid cheesesteak and they were busy.

Ry & Howie’s Steaks and Hoagies, Medford, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

Ry & Howie are taking the cheesesteak world by storm!!  I’ve been to Ry & Howie’s twice.  Two very good trips.  Awesome customer service, which is getting harder to find.  Good ingredients and very well made.  I got the seeded roll.  Everything was finely chopped.  I don’t hate that.  But, when you use good ingredients I want to bite into them and taste them.  I think a thicker slice of meat and less chop would work well with this cheesesteak.

Chick’s Deli, Cherry Hill, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Chick’s Deli made it cool for Cherry Hillians to eat cheesesteaks in an alley.  Chick’s Deli is a fan favorite and does well in March Cheesesteak Madness.  Chick’s doesn’t make it easy for cheesesteak color commentators.  They make a very good traditional cheesesteak.  Their rolls are nice and fresh.  The meat, cheese, onions and mushrooms spent a good amount of time on the grill getting to know each other and blending flavors.  Unfortunately this wasn’t Chick’s best effort and we had the cheese mostly on the bottom.

Brynn Bradley, Woodbury, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Roll, meat and cheese, you think it would be easy.  Brynn Bradley has 10 & 16 oz meat options.  I went with the 16.  At first I was glad I did because it was only $3 more.  But, they use a good roll.  Nice crust and dense bread.  Between the 16 ozs of meat and dense bread this cheesesteak was a little cumbersome to eat.  Very good amount and melted cheese.  The onions and mushrooms and very good flavor.

Gouldsburger’s, Haddonfield, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Gouldsburger’s made it into March Cheesesteak Madness on reputation and pictures I have seen online.  I was looking forward to this cheesesteak.  I appreciate people trying to upgrade the cheesesteak.  This passed the upgraded cheesesteak eye test.  Fancy roll with several different seeds on it.  The mushrooms and onions looked delicious.  The meat had a thicker slice which I like for good meat.  My first bite of meat was very good but it was downhill from there.  For the most part the meat was difficult to eat.

Italian Kitchen, Pennsville, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

If I lived in Pennsville I would eat every meal at the Italian Kitchen.  I would get invited to more parties because I would always bring something from the Italian Kitchen.  Without mushrooms the small (12”) cheesesteak is $12.99.  Watch the video.  Then we’ll see you at the Italian Kitchen.

Nick’s Pizza, Wilmington, DE

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Does Delaware have a top tier cheesesteak?  You have to watch the video to find out what I think.  I’m glad I watched the video.  $14.75 with mushrooms.  Probably $13.75 without mushrooms.  Watch the video and tell me that it is not well worth $13.75.  Double dog dare you!!  I’m doubly glad I watched the video because it reminded me that a very attractive woman walked into Nick’s while I was videoing.

Peter & Sons Sandwiches, Glassboro, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

I remember when Peter (& Tina) & Sons was a cheesesteak on a pretzel and a few other sandwiches.  Their menu has grown and everything looks amazing.  I was going to get my cheesesteak on the pretzel.  I am glad I asked what roll options they had.  I got my cheesesteak on the garlic bread roll.  The dripping buttery garlicky bread roll.  Very flavorful!

Donkey’s Place, Camden, NJ

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

I loved Donkey’s Place before they starred in a sitcom.  Full disclosure, my first trip to Donkey’s was a bust.  It was a Friday.  They were packed.  I had to squeeze in at the bar.  I didn’t expect the poppy seed roll.  I have crooked teeth.  Crooked teeth and poppy seed rolls don’t go well together.  Fast forward 3ish trips.  I love Donkey’s.  They have a picture of Jim Thorpe with Donkey on the wall.  Everyone is posting their pictures with Jason Kelce.  No disrespect to Jason.  If I had a picture with him I would be posting it.  But, Jim Thorpe.  A town changed their name to Jim Thorpe.

Scalessa’s My Way Old School Italian Kitchen, Wilmington, DE

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Scalessa’s is best known for Donnie’s singing and the meatballs.  And the butter cake.  When I first looked at this year’s March Cheesesteak Madness entry I was very concerned.  It did not look good at all.  Actually, all you could see was roll.  The first bite fixed everything.  Very well made.  Then again, that’s what we expect for Scalessa’s.

Ioanonni’s Specialty Sandwiches, New Castle, DE

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Ioanonni’s is a fan favorite in Northern Delaware.  Maybe best known for their Roast Beef.  Their cheesesteak has done well in past March Cheesesteak Madness’.  Unfortunately this was not their best effort.  You can see in the pictures that the top is dry.  It had good parts but it was not put together well.

Union St Pub, Wilmington, DE

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Union St Pub could be my new Wilmington hang out.  Dom gets a new little lunch crowd.  The mushrooms on my cheesesteak were very good.  I may have to try his other food.  A woman at the bar got a good looking pork chop.  The cheesesteak comes on a garlic bread roll.  I have a picture in my head of what garlic bread rolls look like and this roll did not look like my vision.  I had a tough time getting past that.  My head was sending my mouth conflicting signals.  Dom is doing a great job.  Union St Pub, one of my new favorite places in Wilmington.

Nora Lee’s, Historic New Castle, DE

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

New Jersey/Delaware Region

Contestant video

Who do the VooDoo?  Nora Lee’s do the VooDoo!  Nora Lee’s has a cajun cheesesteak on the lunch menu.  I love Nora Lee’s.  I love historic New Castle.  I love that Nora Lee’s neighbor, Jessop’s Tavern, let us judge 4 cheesesteaks in their place.  A cajun cheesesteak probably isn’t going to win March Cheesesteak Madness but you should plan a visit to Historic New Castle.
