2025 March Cheesesteak Madness

Delco Region – Contestant video

The bad news is they lost points because they did Not start making my cheesesteak right away. The good news is while I was waiting the nice lady working in the cheese section complimented my sweatshirt. I guess it is a push. I took my cheesesteak to Ship Bottom Brewing in Swarthmore. That wasn’t good for the roll. The cheesesteak had a good amount of meat/cheese. They were mixed very well together. The fried onions got lost. I would have liked more flavor.

Delco Steaks, Broomall, PA

Delco Region – Contestant video

Is this the year Delco Steaks wins March Cheesesteak Madness?? They are off to a good start. They make a consistently good cheesesteak. It starts with a very good seeded roll. It has a very good amount of good meat. The cheese is melted onto everything. This particular cheesesteak had a good amount of onions. This could be their year!!

Leo’s Steak Shop, Folcroft, PA

2025 March Cheesesteak Madness

The first time I went to Leo’s I called it a cheesesteak’s cheesesteak. That still holds true. This is a big cheesesteak. I got a small. I’m going to get 4 meals out of this cheesesteak. I took my cheesesteak to Ship Bottom Brewing in Swarthmore. That was a good decision by me. Leo’s was busy as always. As an old man I would trade some meat and cheese for more flavor.

Pop’s Pizzeria, Glen Mills, PA

I’m a big Pop’s pizzeria fan. I treat myself to their pizza when I have been a good boy. They sold a lot of pizza while I waited for my cheesesteak. Unfortunately, this year’s March Cheesesteak Madness cheesesteak didn’t live up to the memory of last year’s entry. This cheesesteak was very good. It was very cheesey. Just not the same.

Michael’s Sandwich Shop, Woodlyn, PA

Solid corner store sandwich shop cheesesteak. $13.25. I remember the 1st time my dad took us to Michael’s over 45 years ago. It was pre-michael. Michaels’ wasn’t our usual cheesesteak shop. We thought we had made dad mad so he stopped at Michael’s instead of driving the extra 20 minutes to our usual Cheesesteak shop.

Wolf’s Superior Sandwiches, Aston, PA

2024 March Cheesesteak Madness

Delco 6 Region – Contestant video

In honor of the Eagles winning the Super Bowl I got ‘the Eagle.’ A cheesesteak with ketchup and Saquon cheese sauce. While waiting for my cheesesteak I read about the other specials. The Taylor Swift sounded amazing but it was NOT a cheesesteak. A different sandwich comes on a garlic seeded roll. I got really bad order envy and couldn’t enjoy my cheesesteak. I wasn’t a fan of the Saquon cheese. It wasn’t a good night for my roll.

Johnny Paisano’s, Springfield, PA

Oh Johnny! This man can cook! Tuesday Night during a snowstorm and he has a crowd. Knowing Johnny can cook, I got the Steak Anthony. This thing was pretty and ate like a cheesey Italian meat dream. It came with Prosciutto, roasted peppers, fried onions, and sharp provolone. Who knew those things would go together? That’s right, Johnny did!

The Roll passed the eye and touch test with flying colors. The very good roll got me excited for this cheesesteak. A new role for the roll; does it set the rest of the cheesesteak up for failure? $13. A good amount of good meat. A good amount of cheese melted nicely. Everything was good but fell short of the high expectations set by the roll. The roll needs a co-star.

Chef Reeky’s Cafe, Woodlyn, PA

I can be a part time vegan. 3 choices for Vegan Cheesesteak, impossible burger, seitan, mushrooms. I went with mushrooms. The cheesey mushroom mixture was flavorful. I would combine that mixture with a whole lot of other foods. The roll not so much. I liked the vibe at Chef Reeky’s. I would have gotten a juice but I was going to Ship bottom Brewing. Bonus bathroom video.

I’m glad I watched my video. I got this cheesesteak on a snowy night. It sat in my trunk for a while. Wrapped up sitting in my trunk wasn’t good for the roll. They had Gumbo as a weekly special. I really wanted the Gumbo. I got a Banana Pudding. It was amazing and I have bonus Banana Pudding video. My memory has been jaded by the gumbo and banana pudding. The meat, cheese and fried onions on this cheesesteak were pretty darn tasty.

The Original Thunderbird is a timeless classic. I took my cheesesteak Ship Bottom brewing. I suggest you eat your cheesesteak at Thunderbirds in one of the old booths or on a stool at the counter. I love that Bill & Tom are paying respect to their roots. I love that Tom is very particular about the ice cream they use for their milkshakes. My cheesesteak had a good flavor. I would have liked a slice or two more cheese. The onions looked good but didn’t add much flavor. It came on a pretty roll.

This was a great stop. The cheesesteak, spanokopita, pizza, and chocolate chip cookies were awesomeness. These people can cook. Toasted roll option for the cheesesteak. It has a good amount of well seasoned meat. The cheese is melted onto everything. The onions add a very good flavor. The cheesesteak pizza took cheesesteaks and pizzas to a whole new level. High level. Good level. I love the dough for the spanokopita. Cheesesteak, $12.50, slap my face! Great people.

I am really happy 39 North is in March Cheesesteak Madness. The cheesesteak failed the eye test miserably. Luckily I don’t always trust my eyes. The meat was tender, juicy and a pleasure to eat. $14, you know I liked that. Corropolese roll that collapsed nicely around the meat. I need more from the cheese and fried onions. In the honor of the Eagles, I got garage beer. That was a mistake. Great people. I am sorry I forgot the bartender’s name. She was awesome.

We got the Frankie’s Steak. It came with sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, and roasted peppers. Full disclosure 2 weeks I swore off cheesesteaks with broccoli rabe and/or spinach but we trusted the man wearing a shirt with someone’s else name on it. The Frankie did not pass the eye test. I was not looking forward to my first bite. I could not have been more incorrect. This was a joy to eat. The meat was tender and flavorful. Best broccoli rabe I ever had.

This should be the cheesesteak everyone is talking about. Good ingredients, made well, $12, bar, parking, and bathroom, everything I could want in a cheesesteak. BUT, it leaves me wanting more. Seasoning? Everything on this cheesesteak is very good, it needs something to make it GREAT!

Barnaby’s, Havertown, PA

2025 March Cheesesteak Madness

Delco Region – Contestant video

Barnaby’s had a big lively Tuesday lunch crowd. The cheesesteak comes with very good french fries and a pickle. The cheesesteak has a very good amount of meat. The meat has a good flavor. The onions were a good case study. They were chopped up very small. There were a lot of them. They didn’t add much flavor. It needed more cheese. $13.50, I feel a little better.
